Tricount is the most generous free app in the category. That's a hard thing to argue with, so we won't — here's the narrow case for each.
Which should you choose?
Choose Tricount if the group is mixed between iPhone and Android, or if you need one of its 37 languages. Choose Splitt if you want receipt scanning, automatic multi-currency conversion and balances that stay between the two people who shared the bill. Neither will charge you.

Both are free — so what decides it
Splitt used to have a metered free tier and no longer does: no expense cap, no group cap, no history window, no ads. So price is off the table and the comparison comes down to platform and features, which is a cleaner argument anyway.
What free actually cost Tricount
When bunq rewrote the app, Premium was deprecated and everything became free. Good news, mostly. But four things went out with the paywall: CSV and PDF export, Personal mode, statistics, and saved custom splits. Statistics and custom splits are said to be coming back. Export is the one people notice — if you reconcile a trip in a spreadsheet afterwards, that workflow is currently gone.
The second change is signup. Classic Tricount let you start a shared account with no registration at all. The current app asks for personal details and verifies a phone number. For a five-person weekend away, some people find that a lot of ceremony. If that's you, Splid is the app with no account at all — not us; Splitt requires one too.
Where Splitt earns its keep
Against a free app, Splitt has to justify existing. Two things do it. The first is receipt scanning: point the camera at the bill and the expense is entered, which is the difference between a ledger filled in at the table and one reconstructed on the flight home. Tricount can attach a photo of the receipt but doesn't read it.
The second is currency handling. Splitt converts automatically across44 currencies as you enter expenses. Tricount supports multiple currencies but doesn't publish how conversion behaves, and we won't characterise it without a source.
Third, smaller: Splitt keeps debts pairwise. Tricount explicitly nets the group to limit the number of transactions, which is efficient and occasionally produces a payment to someone you never bought anything with.
The honest summary
Tricount is cross-platform and speaks your language. If those two are what you need, take it — it's a good app and we'd rather you use a good app than the wrong one. Splitt is for the group that wants the expense logged the moment it happens, in whatever currency it happened in, with the receipt read rather than typed.
